왜 도덕 (morality)는 교사에게 중요한가.
개인적으로 교직에 대한 나의 시각은 전문직업성(professionalism)에 바탕을 두고 있으며, 그런 이유로 전문직업성의 핵심 요소인 직업 윤리 (professional ethics)가 매우 중요하다고 본다.
나 개인적으로도 교직을 시작하고 몇 년이 다되어 가도록 이 점을 절실하게 깨닫지 못하였다. 이 점을 깨닫게 된 직접적인 계기가 대학원에서 인문의학을 전공하면서 의학 전문직업성에 대한 석사논문을 쓰면서였다.
학생에게 내가 가장 강조하는 것도 '태도 (attitude)'이다. 태도는 생각의 반영이며, 다시 말하면, 인간을 바라보는 시각 (a view of humans)이기도 하다. 즉, 자신의 목적 혹은 이익 달성을 위한 수단으로 타인을 대하는 가, 아니면 인간 그 자체로 (더 나아가서 생명 그 자체로) 존중하는 마음 자세를 가지고 타인을 대하는가가 매우 중요하다고 생각한다. 이는 칸트(Immanuel Kant)의 철학적 주장의 핵심이기도 하다.
Why does morality matter to teachers?
As a history teacher, I think professionalism is very important, and regarding professionalism, professional ethics is its essence.
I confess that since beginning to work as a teacher, I had also not realised the importance of this aspect until the time when I wrote my master's thesis on medical professionalism at graduate school.
What I emphasise towards students always is also 'attitude', which is the reflection of one's own thoughts. That is, what matters is whether we treat others as tools or cards to achieve our own goals or interests, or we treat others as precious human beings regardless of any benefits for ourselves. This is the core of Immanuel Kant's philosophical arguments.
